The Lab and Doctor Relationship in the Dental Industry

There is a close bond between a dentist and a lab technician. It is through time that the dentist and technician grow together to provide patient with aesthetic results they want. It takes time to understand descriptions like "tight", "thin" or "close" when designing and engineering a smile, and the relationship between the lab technician and dentist is critical in setting those individual preferences. Dentistry is an art, and it is not surprising that the industry is often filled by a creative and intuitive individuals.

There are few people who know the relationship between a dentist and a lab quite like Gregory Harris. Greg has been a consultant in the dental industry for 25 years specializing in dentist and lab communication. Greg was recently in Calgary and we spent quite a bit of time talking about the need for collaboration in dentistry and learning from his experience and knowledge in the industry.

While Greg was in town we filmed a quick video on the collaboration between dentists and dental labs, and how technology has been developed to foster this relationship, providing tools to clarify and simplify communication.

I do “love” my job and it is the people I meet that continue to inspire me, motivate me and give me the extra energy to do more with Brightsquid. As I continue to meet inspired dental people, I’ll continue to introduce them to you in this blog – stay tuned.

Internet Explorer 7 Support Update

With our most recent 1.16 release we have ceased support for Internet Explorer 7.  Our support for this browser to date has been limited, and Mark and the support team have been gently encouraging our users to upgrade, but as of 1.16, we will no longer address any Internet Explorer 7 issues.
Why are we doing this?  First and foremost, Microsoft has been encouraging users to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 or higher for some time now.  Internet Explorer 8 offers better security features, superior performance, and is a more advanced browser overall.
Supporting Internet Explorer 7 has become an increasingly time consuming task.  As we try to implement new and more advanced techniques to allow you to securely interact with your colleagues, getting these features working in Internet Explorer 7 has been taking more and more time.  Further, usage has steadily decreased to the point where Internet Explorer 7 makes up less than 3% of our traffic.
While this may cause some inconvenience, this move is necessary to keep your Brightsquid experience secure, intuitive and, well, awesome.
If you have some dependency on Internet Explorer 7 for another piece of software you use, we'd suggest installing an additional browser for your Brightsquid and general web usage.  Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari are all very good alternatives.  I prefer Chrome myself, but they are all excellent browsers.
If you have any additional questions, our support team is always happy to help support@brightsquid.com or 1-800-238-6503.

Growing Strong - Thanks to You

I have had a number of fulfilling times leading the Brightsquid team. It has been exciting to watch as the business grew from a few members with big dreams to a successful company and international team. Recently we have had excellent exposure in the dental publications and many social channels. But there is nothing better than seeing dentists, specialists and dental labs rapidly adopting Secure-Mail™ and using Brightsquid Dental Link every day to share sensitive patient information.

This won't be the first time that I talk about our growth, but I am so excited about the numbers that I have to share a few quick stats:
  • 1500 users in 9 countries around the world
  • 800 files transferred per week
  • Between 5-12 new users added everyday
Thank you to all of our users. We are committed to your success and excited to be working for you on the product. Every 4-6 weeks we do a release and upgrade the features available to our users. There are a number of exciting releases coming your way, with new features to look forward to.

On Thursday, May 9 we pushed another release to our customers, centered on helping our users grow their network of colleagues. We have designed this update to meet the needs of our customers and focusing on improving some of our user favorite features.

New features to look for in the update:

  • You can now send a Secure-Mail™ message to users outside of Brightsquid Dental Link which will prompt them to join your network.
  • New Secure-Mail™ editor for advanced formatting and control.
  • Improved referral invitations with organization's logo and improved content to brand your organization and help your colleague relate to the message.
  • Enhanced Secure-Mail™ recipient list with profile photos to help confirm and identify recipients. I am very excited about this feature as it might seem like a novelty, but the ability to double check your recipients is not only key to communication it is also recommended through HIPAA and PIPEDA legislation
  • Senders profile photos are now added to the Secure-Mail™ message and visible by the recipient.
  • Manage your Secure-Mail™ settings to include subject lines in the email notifications sent to the recipients.
All of our upgrades are driven by our users and we look forward to hearing your feedback. Please let us know what you think of the new features and any improvements you would like to see.

Thriving in the Dental Industry

Dentistry is filled with entrepreneurs and innovative business professionals which is one of the reasons I love being so close to the industry. I met Gary over the phone a few weeks ago after a common friend of ours, Michael Dunn, introduced us. Gary has a genuine interest in dentistry, in people and is one of those rare individuals who can make you feel comfortable – even over the phone. We quickly found common ground in our technical geek world and spoke about how technology was having a dramatic influence on the course of dentistry. This was one of the many drivers that we both saw shaping the future of dentistry.  The best part was that Gary had enough experience and real world stories to rivet our conversation in reality.

Education is Gary's true calling, he found a need for dental practice education and started The Takacs Learning Center, http://www.takacslearningcenter.com, to help develop practices that are both profitable and enjoyable. Gary lectures around 40 times a year, teaching and supporting dental practices all around the world.

Gary also started the The Thriving Dentist Show, a podcast to share information that is freely accessible to dental professionals. The Thriving Dentist Show is the #1 Dental podcast on iTunes and has been downloaded by Dentists in 91 countries. You can subscribe to The Thriving Dentist Show on iTunes so you will never miss an episode. Just search for Thriving Dentist Show on iTunes (it's FREE). Gary along with the host of the show Andy Traub provides specific content on how to develop a thriving dental practice and often interviews authorities on topics of interest to his audience.

Recently, I had the privilege of being interviewed by Gary on his Thriving Dentist Show audio podcast. Gary is an excellent presenter and I was thrilled to be invited as a guest on the show titled ’Dental Records in the Cloud’. Here is a link for my recent interview: http://bit.ly/XSzCnu.
I do “love” my job and it is the people I meet that continue to inspire me, motivate me and give me the extra energy to do more with Brightsquid. As I continue to meet inspired dental people, I’ll continue to introduce them to you in this blog – stay tuned.

Join Our Live Webinar

We have scheduled two webinars to meet the needs of our global community.

Please register for the webinar that best suits your schedule.

Patient privacy is a growing concern for dental professionals. Recently, we have seen fines and lawsuits targeting smaller organizations with devastating repercussions.

Being compliant in the “real world” might be apparent as there are strict rules about how you handle patient privacy in your practice, but being compliant in the “electronic world” is not as obvious. The rules governing patient privacy dictate the steps that all organizations must take to manage patient privacy, but putting them into practice is a different matter. For example, Outlook, GMail, Dropbox, and many other tools that are commonly used for patient information sharing are NOT compliant with patient privacy laws.

What does this mean to you and how will the strict enforcement of these rules apply to your dental practice? During the webinar, Joshi will provide some background of HIPAA, HITECH and PIPEDA laws and give real world solutions about how to lower your risk and get compliant.

About Our Presenter

Rohit Joshi, Chief Executive Officer

Rohit has earned a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, a Master's Degree in Medical Science (Surgery/Orthopaedics) and a Bachelor's degree in Law, all from the University of Calgary.

For the past 20 years, Rohit has held senior executive positions with life science and technology companies in the USA and Canada, with a focus on using technology for effective communication.

Dr. Carl Johnson DDS on HIPAA Compliant Communication

We love all the great reviews and videos we have been receiving from our exceptional customers. They are avid users of Brightsquid.

Today we wanted to feature Dr. Carl Johnson D.D.S, P.S. from Pacific Northwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Johnson has been using Brightsquid for 2 years and likes the HIPAA compliance and security that Brightsquid provides, saying "I would definitely recommend Brightsquid it's HIPAA capable, that's one feature we have been worrying about particularly with all the new federal regulation about HIPAA compliance and privacy. I know all these areas are being enforced more. It also gives a sense of confidence with our patients when we explain to them how we are transmitting their medical records and medical information to other doctors and other venues."

Watch Dr. Johnson's video on secure HIPAA compliant communication.

Thank you Dr. Johnson for your wonderful recommendation of Brightsquid Dental Link! We couldn't have said it better :)

We have a number of user videos coming in, so please stay tuned for more great videos, interviews and recommendations. If you love Brightsquid Dental Link and would like to be featured in or would like more information on our videos, please email contact@brightsquid.com.

Ambition, Dedication and Success in the Dental Industry

2013 will be a year of rapid growth and development for Brightsquid Dental Link. We are just finishing our annual business development meetings and I am filled with excitement and promise. There are a number of exciting releases coming your way through the year. I don’t want to give too much away; all I’m going to say is that 2013 is going to be a very big year for both our customers and team here at Brightsquid.

One of Brightsquid’s secrets to success is our amazing international partners. We are fortunate to have the support of many groups, foundations and individuals throughout the dental industry, and I know that 2013 will be a successful and busy year for us all. The Japanese market has been a very compelling opportunity for Brightsquid and there are a number of exciting developments and growth planned for 2013.

Today I would like to introduce you to Dennis Sudo. Dennis is a member of Core3d Japan and the Daishin Trading Company based out of Osaka, Japan. Dennis is more than just a business partner, but a friend to everyone here at Brightsquid Dental Link. I am always impressed by Dennis’s ambition and dedication and when I am lucky enough to meet Dennis in Japan, or he is here in town I am reminded and re-energized on the exciting possibilities of working together. I feel there are many different channels to Brightsquid’s growth in 2013, and our partnership and relationship with Dennis holds more than just talent and promise but attainable and targeted successes.

Dr. Bicuspid (http://www.drbicuspid.com) recently featured a great article on dentistry and cloud computing in Japan. The article, “Japanese dentists eye cloud computing for dental records” by Rosemary Frei, MSc (http://www.drbicuspid.com/index.aspx?sec=sup&sub=img&pag=dis&ItemID=311926) features the unique opportunity and need for cloud computing of dental records in Japan.

While Dennis was in Calgary we took the opportunity to get some of his thoughts on dentistry and cloud computing in Japan and filmed a quick video on the subject.

I do “love” my job and it is the people I meet that continue to inspire me, motivate me and give me the extra energy to do more with Brightsquid. As I continue to meet inspired dental people, I’ll continue to introduce them to you in this blog – stay tuned.

Follow us on twitter @brightsquid or use #brightsquidpassion and let me know what you are excited or passion about in 2013.

Java Security Notice - Updated

The U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security is recommending people disable or uninstall Java on their computers.  From the linked story:
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has warned users to disable or uninstall Java software on their computers, amid continuing fears and an escalation in warnings from security experts that hundreds of millions of business and consumer users are vulnerable to a serious flaw.
Brightsquid Dental Link does not require users to have Java, and disabling or uninstalling Java will not affect or degrade your experience using Brightsquid in any way.  I would encourage our users (and everyone else) to disable Java for their own security.

Java is a technology popular with many developers, and tends to be more common on older sites.  Java is currently provided by Oracle and Oracle has provided instructions on how to disable Java here.  Security research firm Sophos has posted a good technical rundown here.

You can comment on this article or contact us directly if you have any questions or concerns.

The day after this was posted, Oracle released a fix for the above mentioned vulnerability which can be downloaded here.  Everyone who has Java should get this update.  People who have no need for Java in their browser may want to consider leaving it disabled, which can be done by following these instructions.
